Paving Jointing Compound: A Complete Guide for Perfect Paving

Paving Jointing Compound: A Complete Guide for Perfect Paving

A patio can be laid perfectly yet let itself down in the joints. A few weeds creeping up between the slabs, cracks here and there and suddenly the whole surface looks old and exhausted. Choosing the right paving jointing compound is the quiet decision that keeps a patio looking sharp for years.

Well, the problem is that there is no one right answer for this. The best product depends on your needs and what stone you've used. Let us understand more about the use of each jointing compound.

Why Most People Forget Paving Jointing Compound

The first thing that captures all attention is slabs. They are what you choose in the showroom and what your friends admire on the first summer evening. Very few people think about preserving the beauty of their stone. And they realise this late, when weeds push through, or sand washes away after a heavy storm.

Good joints do more than fill a gap. They help hold the paving in place and keep the weeds out. A little thought at this stage saves a lot of kneeling later.

Fine Paving Sand: The Weed-Fighting Workhorse

Joint-It Fine Paving Sand is made for block paving with joints, which means it suits neat residential driveways and patios. It is particularly for blocks where the blocks sit on a well-compacted sand base. So, make sure to check the details before you buy.

It is formulated to raise the pH in the joints, which helps discourage weeds and windblown seeds from settling in. You will need a whacker plate, water and a bag, and we would recommend a contractor does the work so the results last. It comes in Grey or Neutral.

Slurry Primer: The Handshake Between Slab and Base

To be honest, this one is not a joint product, but wait, there is a reason why it's mentioned here. Joint-IT Slurry Primer is a bonding agent for porcelain, natural stone and concrete slabs. You brush or roll one coat onto the back of each slab before it goes on the concrete base, and it fills tiny cracks and pores on the way.

The payoff is a stronger bond, less risk of slabs separating over time and a more level surface, which means fewer wobbly corners to trip over. It mixes with water and works indoors as well as out.

Simple Grout for Sweep-In Satisfaction

If traditional sand and cement pointing sounds like a long weekend you would rather spend elsewhere, Joint-It Simple Paving Jointing Grout is the friendlier route. You sweep it into the joints, so the job is completed on time. All you need is a hard brush, a soft brush, water and a bucket.

Once set, it is non-staining, water-permeable and resistant to weeds, power washers and frost. It can be applied in wet or dry weather and is suitable for porcelain. Choose from Neutral, Grey, Dark Grey or Black.

Epoxy Grout for Porcelain That Deserves a Neat Finish

Joint-It Dynamic Resin Paving Grout, also known as Porcelain Epoxy Grout, is made for outdoor porcelain and works best in joints. It is cement-free, non-staining, anti-mildew and colour-fast, and it comes in Tan, Grey and Raven.

The best bit is the clean-up. Cement-based grouts have to be washed off porcelain quickly before they stain, but any spills from this one simply peel away with a blade. It is applied with a gun, and a manual gun is fine for touch-ups, while an electric one suits a full patio. One tip: soak the tubes in hot water for 30 minutes first.

Choosing the Right Paving Jointing Compound for Your Patio

Start with what you have laid. Block paving with narrow joints points towards Fine Paving Sand. Porcelain that you want to finish quickly suits Simple Paving Jointing Grout, and tightly laid porcelain with joints is where the epoxy shines. The primer sits behind them all, helping the slabs bond to the base.

When in doubt, tell us what you are working with and we will point you in the right direction.

Conclusion

Great paving is a team effort between slab, base and joint. Get all three right, and your patio will keep its crisp lines long after the novelty has worn off.
